This first volume of his Collected Essays traces the development of Sir John Hicks’s thought on the subject of welfare economics. These papers include the famous 1934 Reconsideration of the theory of value (written jointly with R.G.D. Allen) and many of the seminal articles of the 1940s which established the basis of the new welfare economics. Other papers deals with the valuation of social income and the measurement of capital in theory and practice. The debate is continued with papers from the 1960s and 1970s, including the brilliant (1975) The Scope and Status of Welfare Economics. Individual essays have been prefaced and annotated to reflect subsequent events, indicating also Sir John Hicks’s most recent considered opinion on the subjects.
These essays are indispensable reading for all who are interested in the development of economic thought. |
