This volume explores systematically the field of economics known as industrial organization. It is concerned with structural and behavioural variables affecting the quality of performance of industrial firms in a market economy. Considerable attention is paid to each of the principal dimensions of industrial performance –efficiency in resource allocation and use, distributive equity, progressiveness and macroeconomic stability.
After surveying the theoretical and political arguments for competitive market processes, the book investigates the characteristics and determinants of real-world industrial market structures. The following 12 chapters focus intensively on the complex links between market structure, the conduct of buyers and sellers, and performance. Five concluding chapters analyse the principal policy instruments used in the United States and abroad to avert the performance deficiencies associated with monopoly. |
