Résumé : |
Featuring an essential external and “behavioristic” approach to the subject, this book is concerned with the environmental setting within which business enterprises operate and how they behave in these settings as producers, sellers, and buyers. Major emphasis is given to the relative incidence of competitive and monopolistic tendencies in various industries or markets. Correspondingly, the primary unit of analysis is the industry or competing group of firms.
In analysing the behaviour of industries, the author has drawn heavily upon accepted economic theory, and also upon the literature of the law affecting competition and monopoly, for identifications of significant phenomena to be investigated, conceptualizations, and hypotheses susceptible of empirical testing. The book first examines in detail: (a) patterns of market structure, (b) types and forms of the market conduct of sellers and buyers, and (c) ultimate market performance – within the numerous industries of the American enterprise economy. It then seeks for demonstrable associations among the structure, conduct and performance of industries, to the end determining, for example, the extent to which market performance can be explained (or predicted) in terms of market structure or conduct, or market conduct in terms of structure. Finally, the book applies the findings of the earlier discussions in an appraisal and critique of existing laws and derived public policies affecting enterprise monopoly and competition. |
