| Résumé : | This brief but comprehensive introduction to social psychiatry begins with the basic approaches used to study the various problems, including clinical observation, demography, statistics, sociology and epidemiology. It describes the whole perplexing question of the nature of mental illness and the difficulties of case definition (‘Who is really ill?’) in mental disease. The author goes on to examine the methods of tabulating mental disease, in the community as well as in the hospital, and the likelihood of inaccuracy in a survey approach. Subsequent chapters are devoted to historical perspectives, the incidence of mental disease, and the ways in which psychiatric problems show themselves in different cultures. The influences of war, social upheaval and concentration camps upon the individual’s health are also outlined. The movement towards community psychiatric care as it may affect patients in mental hospitals is critically discussed. |
