Résumé : | This report provides a brief update on current developments in Bangladesh and contributes to the discussion of rural development, industrial development, and domestic resource mobilization. Recent favorable economic progress cannot hide the facts that: (i) economic well-being of most people is still unsatisfactory; (ii) long-term economic trends have not been favorable; and (iii) planning has not been effective. Also, inflation has re-emerged as a serious problem. Rural development should focus on water resources, market prices, jute production, and unemployment and underemployment. Industrial development should promote efficiency, increase autonomy, raise salaries, improve training of skilled workers, and rehabilitate plants and equipment. The total amount of development resources needs to be increased, and the allocation of resources available for public investment needs review. Additional resources should be channeled into agriculture as well as education, health, and population control. |
