The principal concern of the contributors to this volume is how to ensure, in the throes of world recession, that the basic needs of the poorest groups are not eroded or ignored in a tide of adjustment policies. The particular difficulties of sub-Saharan Africa are discussed as well as the problems of interpreting patchy data on hunger and nutrition. Ultimately a revolution is called for in the ideas and priorities both of academic development economists and of aid administrators at the agency headquarters and in the field.
