Résumé : | The author seeks to explore the problems of co-operation and social welfare maximisation in a society with no central planner and characterized by individuals pursuing conflicting interests. Relying on the fundamental assumptions of the Public Choice School and using the tools of modern game theory, Sugden explores the theoretical prepositions of older traditional contract theorists, such as Hume, Hobbes and Smith. Through this state of anarchy, new conventions emerge that establish themselves as dominant social norms. Sugden concludes that, even though such norms may not be maximising social welfare, they tend to dominate due to man's inherent need to be regulated by conventions and (The Public Choice School relies on a methodology of economics For exploring political and social relations) Rights, Co-operation and Welfare |
