Abstract: | Sixteen contributors, experts in their respective fields and mainly Malaysians from the Universiti Kebangsaan, have teamed together under the guidance of veteran political economist, Professor E. K. Fisk, in order to produce this comprehensive and up-to-date survey of the Malaysian economy. The result is to provide for scholar and layman alike an interpretation of the Malaysian scene from the economic point of view which reflects contemporary Malaysian thinking. The book sets out to discuss the underlying problems and features of the Malaysian economy in the light of the physical, social, political and ethnic conditions which shape it. Racial differences within the population; the distribution of wealth, ownership and control; skill differentials between races; the nature, distribution and extent of poverty; the influence of religious systems on social, economic and political attitudes-all these are considered. Taken together with changing and conflicting concepts of equity and of what constitutes the proper basis for the distribution of the national income, what emerges is not so much the question of the rate of growth but that of who should get what, and why. |
