Résumé : |
A classic from 1975, Robert Gilpin, the author of other books from the realist school of international relations, dives into the role multi-national corporations play relative to U.S. global hegemony as it stood in the mid-1970's. If my memory serves me correctly, Dr. Gilpin taught at Princeton, and was considered an important opinion leader on many in government and academia during the late cold war years.
This book deals both with the nature and role of U.S. hegemony in world affairs, also taking a close look at the multi-national corporation and how it was "spreading the wealth" and therefore future economic and political power. The multi-national corporation is also looked at as a player in global dynamics between different nation-states. There was some feeling among those from the liberal school, that the multi-national corporation would make war unprofitable and would provide moderating influences on nation-states. Gilpin challenged many of those notions, still looking at the nation-state as the primary actor and the multi-national corporation as a subsidiary actor in foreign relations. |
