Abstract: |
Since World War II, Taiwan has enjoyed the highest rate of economic growth of any country in the world, with the possible exception of Japan. In this book seven eminent economists, including a Nobel Prize winner, examine and evaluate the Taiwan experience. Their essays, taken together, constitute a major contribution to the literature on economic development.
The authors deal in depth with all major sectors of the Taiwanese economy—agriculture, industry, labor, foreign trade, fiscal policy, and structural change and devote close attention to the question whether Taiwan could serve as an appropriate model for developing nations. Each author has selected, within the broad topics under study, those elements in the growth process that impressed him as the most interesting and significant. Sponsored by the Joint Council on Sino-American Cooperation in the Humanities and Social Sciences, the book contains a great amount of statistical material gathered with the assistance and cooperation of scholars in the Republic of China. For those interested in economic development policy, it will prove to be invaluable. |
