"This is an account of a conference held in Paris, March 1971, which was organized to asses the major developments in the field of international monetary economics during the past decade and to stimulate new directions in research.
The papers and discussions cover the appropriate combination of monetary, fiscal, exchange rate and other conceivable stabilization policies in a world of limited information: policy prescriptions in open economies according to the Keynesian and monetarist view; stabilization policies in a Common Market and in some selected countries. Particular significance is attached to two new lines of thought: firstly, the monetarist view and the problem of interdependence between economies, the optimum balance of payments deficits, and inflation and fluctuations in nominal and real income; secondly, the limitations of stabilization policies in economies with a high degree of openness and problems of an integrated economic areaµ. Scholars interested in the field of international monetary problems, the theory of economic policy and macroeconomics generally, will find this book relevant, so too will officials, bankers and all those who should have a better understanding of the economic relation between countries." |
